Just Saying

Two reasons not to call a child 'Lauren'. Just saying.

Whoa! I have a grand, Lauren, named after her great grandfather, Loren. She's a good kid, as scatter brained as her granny, as loving as her mom, as talented as her sister, as smart as her big brother, as kind as her other brother, as funny as her dad, and as loved as all get out. Just saying.

I know Brighid. It's awfully high-handed of me to take exception to what is essentially a beautiful name just because a couple of reality TV types are called it.

How where you to know that in the back of beyond there is no TV, so no clue about who the tarts are....lol

I don't know if it's the same in America but here in the UK and Ireland certain names get taken up by people who it's hard to admire or, they are overused. An example is 'Chloe' which I have always loved but which was used by a certain right wing political agitator in Northern Ireland for his daughter. Lots of people followed the trend and it really put me off the name.

American culture is awash in idiotic names and the ridiculous spelling of same- mostly catty copying erzatz celebs.

Of course, despite the great thought I put into naming my two, they both went through an preteen period of hating them.

P.S.
I disliked my name so heartily that I use Anne -which is my confirmation name. :-)

There's a lot to be said for the classic names. Names like John or Mary. In the 19th and early 20th century people chose names from a much smaller pool. I'm not sure that it wasn't a far better way of going about things.
