Turf Castles

turf castles, originally uploaded by NellyMoser.

Just a random picture from one of my favourite places on earth - the moss at Drumkeeran.

What a delightful picture. Is the stacking of the peat done that way as a rule?

One of the few things my mother told me she remembered of her visit (she was about 3 or 4 at the time) was the scent of the burning peat. She likened it to baked potatoes.

Peats burning does smell like baked potatoes. Turf tacking is done different ways by different people in different places. The method illustrated would be typical of that particular moss which is very traditional. It is owned by Lord O'Neill of Shane's Castle and he only permits hand cut turf.
