It has been a week now and every day brings new experiences for Baby James. He received his first letter today addressed to Mr James Surname. Imagine! A Mr at under three weeks. In my day It would have been Master James.
I have been having lots of new experiences too, mostly to do with TV shows. I have watched, and for the first time, The Great British Bake Off, One Born Every Minute and Location, Location, Location and, I have to say, I enjoyed them all. That Phil guy in Location is quite attractive.
And I've got back into daily walks. This is something I must keep up when I get back to Ireland because it makes me feel so good. Of course, it helps that everything here is new to me. The wildflowers are different, there are far more species of butterfly to see. The roads are quiet and there are lots of off-road tracks and paths. Syderstone Common is a delight.
So what of Baby James? He'll be three weeks old tomorrow. Sometimes he is easy, sometimes not. He is growing before our eyes and his Mummy is very patient and loving. He seems to like her too. It will be hard saying goodbye to him but there is always Christmas. And thankfully there is social media. I'll get to see him grow up, if sometimes it will be at a distance. I will always be grateful for this time.

Starved
I was brought up in a
family where breast feeding was the norm. I had been breast fed
myself, I'd seen all my six brothers and sisters breast fed and it
never occurred to me to do anything else.
Back when I had my children feeding one's
child oneself was not the norm and midwives did not seem to
encourage it. Nevertheless I persevered and it all went well for
me. There were no problems, my little ones thrived and that thing called 'baby
weight' melted away in no time.
As time passed I found
out more about my own and Matty's early experiences. My mother let
the odd thing drop and eventually it all became clear. She had a
difficult breech birth with me and did not recover well. She felt
isolated and unsure of how to deal with her first child. I was very
underweight and she struggled with nursing. As her anxiety increased,
she neglected to nourish herself and consequently I was starving at the
breast. She told me that there were fierce District Nurses who called
very often such was their concern for this baby that failed to
thrive.
Then my Aunt Sarah
visited. She had a son six months older than me. He was a giant baby,
dark curls, the fattest chubby cheeks, a great lump of a well-fed
infant. Aunt Sarah was horrified to see the scrawny thing that Matty
had produced.
Give that child a bottle! Thicken it with Farex. Put sugar in it.
Matty did as her sister
said and I started to thrive. Got chubby. But I never, ever forgot
that early starving. All my life I have wanted more food. At times of
anxiety I just want to eat and I especially want to eat starchy,
sugary things. I must have adored those thickened, sweetened bottles
of milk.
I've been thinking
about this recently for I've gained weight. Again. I can't stop
eating. And that cousin? The one who never knew hunger in his entire
life? You should see him now. He's as lean as a whippet and a right handsome devil.

Well I Never!

I called round to Martha's house the other day and discovered that her mother has taken to wearing the child! According to Zoe, Martha was enjoying this very much and, from what I observed on the day, I'd have to agree.

You can see from the expressions on their faces, as they admire their reflections, that mother and daughter think they suit each other very well.
But I wonder if Martha noticed the spare baby hanging in the hall?

Suffering Grandmas!
I am greatly maligned.
Firstly my youngest daughter informs the entire world that I might know what snot tastes like. As if!
Then the oldest daughter photoshops my thumb to make it look as big as a house. She must have done for there's no way my digit could ever look that gigantic.

I May Have Omitted To Mention

Barnaby Rudge and Grip the Raven
I finished listening to Barnaby Rudge and I have to say I enjoyed it very much. I particularly liked that illustration as it fitted very well with the image of Barnaby that I had in my mind.
I have changed my car. I now drive a Peugeot 307 estate and Matty is very pleased with it. Bonnie does not like it as much as my VW Polo as she has been confined to the boot so far. It's a very big boot but it's still a comedown for her.
My granddaughter is one calendar month today. She is even more beautiful than she was. I really do hope she doesn't peak too soon!
We are looking forward to having Katy and her fiance come to stay. We expect there shall be a great deal of talk about weddings. We shall try to bear it.
The pigs went away a week ago today. They will be coming home in the form of sausages and other yummy things in the very near future. There has been no word of the Kune Kunes but - trotters crossed!
We brought a little light into our lives with the help of Pascal the Rascal. (This is cryptic and will only be understood by a very few, mostly called Joe)
Hannah has discovered a new fascination for the natural world. She still can't tell a plant from a tree but she's very keen on parasitic wasps.
There are some other things going on which are not a matter for levity. As always, in the midst of Life....
And that is all.... for now.

Catching Up
It was three days since I'd last set eyes on my grandchild and I just could not keep away for another moment. Hannah and I called in for ten minutes after work. It was a lengthy ten minutes. How fascinating this little human being is! And really, all she does is nurse and poo and burp and pull the most peculiar faces. I'm told she cries but, so far, never in my presence.
She is, of course, far more beautiful than the normal run of babies. She is, which goes without saying, already displaying signs of superior intelligence. And, for a creature barely a week old, she is amazingly strong and active and alert.
Am I besotted? I think I must be.

The Best News In The World
Today was always going to be a busy day. We'd planned to go visit, with a view to procuring, kunekune pigs. Later we'd be going to the Wee Manny's for a surprise birthday party.
What I didn't expect was hearing from Dave that Zoe has been safely delivered of a daughter, our first grandchild. She was a week earlier than expected - the impatient little thing!
So now I must go and wash the smell of pig from my person and get myself ready to visit Zoe, Dave and daughter.

Encounters
I bumped into Joe in B&Q yesterday. He gave me the loveliest smile and I have to confess I was pretty bowled over. For the first time I realised that he really likes me. (And I'm getting married next week.) I walked out of that store on a cloud.
He called to the office today and treated me to another of those gorgeous smiles. We cuddled. He snuggled into me. I smelled his hair (so clean) and kissed him. (I'm getting married next week.)
We hung out together for thirty minutes or so. I was lost...got no work done. Finally I came to my senses. It was after one o'clock. I handed him back to his Dad.
I think he needs his nappy changed.
