Theology and the Beauty Pageant

'In the Bible it says marriage is between Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve.' (Charmaine Koonce, the mother of Miss New Mexico USA Bianca Carla)

One of my father's favourite ways of opening a discussion was to say.

"Now I'm no theologian but...."

Like Daddy, I'm no theologian either, but this I do know. There is no one in the bible called Steve.

Some other things I know,

Leprechauns do not exist.
Santa Claus does not live in Lapland.
The Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy are imaginary concepts.
The bible and the koran are books.
Statues do not weep human tears.
Irish people rarely eat corned beef and cabbage.

Our Piggy Did Not Die In Vain

Eat Me

I got a bit pissed at Bert yesterday because he threw out the peanut butter.

Why? What was wrong with it?

The sell-by date was 2007.

For God’s sake! That’s only last year. Sure it wouldn’t have done you a pin of harm!

So you can imagine how annoyed I am about this Irish Pork Crisis.

…..the UK Food Standards Agency said it believed no pigs in Northern Ireland had consumed the tainted feed. But it said pork labelled ROI or NI should still be thrown out or returned.

Like any sensible person, I think it’s terribly wrong that pigs are fed contaminated foodstuffs, but this reaction is overkill. Our pig (currently resident in the Nellybert freezer) scoffed her fair share of store-bought grub. And we’ll be eating her. It would be rude not to.

Chain Gang Chic

I read that folks sentenced to community punishment are soon going to be wearing high-visibility 'shame jackets' emblazoned with the words 'Community Payback' on the back. I can't say I approve. After all, doesn't everyone and his dog wear hi-viz on the streets these days? What's wrong with good, old-fashioned black and white horizontal stripes? I saw, sometime in the late nineties, offenders garbed in this traditional fashion as they cleaned the streets of a small town somewhere in Mississippi, and I have to say that this looked a lot more eye-catching and shameful than a bright orange jacket.

The Drowning of the Causeway

I wonder if it is because I am now (probably) in the second half of my time on earth that I find myself increasingly unbothered by reports such as this.

So the Giant's Causeway goes underwater. Is this so terrible? After all it will still be there. It's just that only divers and fish and seals will get to see it. I don't think they'll need to be bothering themselves about that Visitor's Centre after all.Photo courtesy of randubnick

What A Load Of Junk

Restrictions on television junk food adverts do not properly protect children, say researchers.

A report by Which? magazine concludes that children are still exposed to adverts that promote foods with high sugar, salt and fat content.

So they are proposing a 9pm watershed.

Like junk-fed brats really do go to bed at 9pm. And don't the parents have any say as to what children eat? Or do they pay Child Benefit directly to the kids these days?

"Parents have a role to play in improving their children's diet, but they need some support in exercising that responsibility, and part of that is not subjecting their kids to wall-to-wall junk food advertising before 9pm."

I'd say that the responsibility lies squarely with the parents. And the only support they should need is that food companies and suppliers offer foodstuffs that are wholesome and healthy. It seems a bit crazy that people are being sold food that is such filthy poison that it can only be promoted after a 9pm watershed. So why is it still legal then?
